Nationals 2006
I think it’s fitting with such an event that we cover it first in our article.
Once again the National titles were held at Nambucca heads in NSW just south (approx 30ks)of Coffs Harbour. The event was held at the Nambucca caravan park with the targets being placed in the state forest adjacent to the caravan park.
This year, for the first time saw the competitors reach 267. That is a great sign that shows us our sport is doing really well.

But on top of that we also had a couple from New Zealand come over to see how it’s done, with the view of taking back the same formula to

use over there. Lets hope they have as much success as what we have been seeing.

Our thanks really have to go to Alan Sherman and his band of helpers for some of the best courses this year, and also to 3DAAA themselves for such a well run event.
With thirty targets being shot on Saturday and twenty shot Sunday the format was what we were used to. Target placement on the other hand was not, with targets like the Croc as seen in the Picture. Courtesy of Stuart Bruton our own budding photographer (thanks for all the pictures).
They even let Michael out for the weekend, who shot a perfect 100 on one of the ranges well done Michael.
I would like to congratulate everyone from Caboolture who managed to get down to Nambucca, It was great to see our club so well represented including some of our newest members the Easton Family and the Brown family from Gympie ( No relation to yours truly).
This year the top ten was held on the Sunday. The Sighted was definately the one to watch as the

blokes got shown how it was done by the girls (sorry can’t remember her name) but I’m sure the others would like to forget. The Unsighted was won By Rhys Aizlewood shooting the only ten.
Presentations were once again held at the Nambucca Bowls Club, Since they did such an awesome job last year I’m sure it was the right decision for this year once again the food was brilliant, with roasts and salads (all help your selves), Neil Digweed (3DAAA Treasurer) was our MC for the night and did a fantastic job although there were a few hiccups with trophies getting mixed up or not found but that was rectified quickly and the rest of the night went on. Caboolture came away with a horde of trophies again. Most of us sitting at one table. I’m not sure who won the most trophies per family but it must have been close between the two Smith families and the Callons. I will make one congratulation though to our newest member Codaey Brown who had only joined two weeks before heading down there came in 3rd in his category. Well done, good to have you with us.
It was a marvelous night and then, as quick as it had all started , it was over for another year.
Stephen

There are many people out there that think “traditional archery is simple”. All you need is a stick and a string and you have a bow. But let them try to shoot an arrow out of that simple bow and they soon realize that it is not that simple. For any bow be it longbow, recurve or compound for that matter must be tuned to suit the shooter’s style of shooting. I’ll be talking about longbows and recurves in this article.
The way to measure the “tuning” of a traditional bow is by measuring the brace height, this is the distance from the back of the arrowshelf to the string. Manufactures have recommended brace heights for each bow they make. eg. Martin Mamba goes from 7.5 inches to 8.5 inches.
The telltale signs of a bow not tuned are, the bow is noisy when an arrow is shot, there are vibrations and hand shock, and the arrow in flight is erratic. The way we tune our bow is by changing the length of the bow string. This is done by simply twisting the string, this will either lengthen the string if you untwist it or shorten the string if you twist it up.
Usually if your bow has vibrations or hand shock, it means the brace height is too low. When you adjust the brace height do it in small steps and wind the string 3 turns at a time, remembering which direction you turned it and how many turns you used, so you can go back to where you started if changing the brace height didn’t work.
If you have trouble with your archery equipment, talk to one of the other club members, we are more than happy to help. In the next article I’ll be talking about tuning your Traditional arrows.

Don’t forget 3DAAA membership application forms are available as a download from our web site or you can
contact me. Remember if you pay before the end of December 2006 you can get an extra 2 months membership for 2007 that’s a great saving!
Caboolture & District Bowmen memberships are due
1st of April 2007
in line with our Constitution so we all get an extra 3 months membership this year. NB: New members will still need to join up so they can shoot during the first 3 months of 2007 at the reduced rate of $30 Adult, $25 Cub or Junior and $35 Family.

End to a Busy Year
Well, another year is over and much has been accomplished, though the hard work of many of our members and some of their friends, some of the improvements being;
1. New practice Range (Just waiting for the grass to grow)
2. New roof to seating area
3. New seating
4. A new bridge (still needs moving into place)
5. Tree stand
6. New cupboards in Canteen
7. New Bows
8. New Targets
9. Repairs to boundary fencing

There are also other items being sought, such as a new toilet block, shade for practice range and with luck, electricity. Items such as these need outside funding and as such take longer to arrange but we are getting there.
We are also currently talking to council on the possibility of either extending our current grounds or to relocate to larger grounds within the same area.

Next year we are looking at taking our major shoot in September back out to Kilcoy but to a new location which I think will be a lot of fun as it will enable us to give everyone a new range of shots, and also give our grounds time to re-grow (water permitting)
There have also been a number of new targets acquired during the year. Due to our current lot of targets being heavily shot out by some of our top shooters (thinking of charging them double for repairing X ring). We are now ready for next 2007.

This year has also seen us break the 100 members barrier, which is absolutely fantastic to see, just goes to show we must be doing something right,
None of these things could have or would have been accomplished with out the help of:
Elva Smith, for her selfless acts and some fantastic food though the year and an unwavering energy to make sure everything was done around the canteen even to the point of NOT shooting herself. And then to put up with the committee every first Friday of the month!
Chris Smith, for maintaining the equipment and grounds and generally organizing safe and enjoyable course.
Don Honey, for number crunching, and keeping the club financially in safe hands
Jacqui Callon, with organising the trophies, shirts, and the countless hours spent on her computer writing all those fantastic articles every month along with our pictures and score recording (and the list goes on!)
Peter Popovic for finding avenues of funding and who has now stepped up to fill the role as secretary. John Warburton who’s always first there to lend a hand with what ever needs to be done,
Thanks also to Al Alcorn (Canga Archery Supplies) whose support with prizes, sponsorship and advice as well as equipment we greatly appreciate.
Stephen, Melinda, Lincoln, Adrian Smith, for installing new fences and annex roof. Gary Penshorn, Perry Jackson, Glenn Hines, for building the tree house and helping to set ranges. Dennis Malone, for the supply of a bridge to replace the old one that was demolished last year
Ashley white, supplying new parts for our equipment and with setting ranges, Warren Tunks and David Johnston who cleared the trees for the new practice range
Noel Traynor, our very own web site guru

who continuously keeps our web pages up to date
Others who have helped out with their time are Mark Wilcher, Michael Hudson, Dwayne Callon, Gerry Ross, Michael Seeley, Jayden Callon, Andrew Johnston Margie Popovic, Krystal Callon, Amanda Johnston, Neil Digweed, Wayne Howden, Joshua Smith Chris Johnston, and Gary Abbott. My apologies if I’ve missed anyone, but it’s so nice to see so many members willing to lend a hand to keep our club at the forefront of our sport.
As you can see it takes a group effort to make a club succeed, so a BIG THANKYOU to everyone for all your help it makes me proud to be a member of such a great club. Keep up the good work.

Caboolture Bowmen

New Email Address
The club now has a new email address. It is linked to our web hosting at 3DAAA and we now don’t need to use members email and will make things much easier when club officers change. Many thanks to BIG Normie Bardell the 3DAAA web spinner. Our new email address is: caboolturebowmen@3daaa.com

Improvements to Club Web Site
If you have had a look at the club’s web site lately you may have noticed that there have been a few improvements. The site should be a little easier to navigate around and now you can access the club newsletter and shoot calendar directly from the site, download membership application forms for 3DAAA and Caboolture Bowmen.

“Canga Money Game”
Al Alcorn from Canga Archery will again directly sponsor an newer version of the Canga Money Game for 2007. It will be exclusive to Caboolture Bowmen to provide a venue for the regions best 3D archers to compete. The rules of qualification and entry have been simplified so that anyone can enter. All you have to do to qualify is to attend 4 Caboolture shoots, 2 being 3DAAA Series and Turkey Shoot, the other 2 being any Caboolture club shoot. The final details and “Pot of Gold” cash prize will be announced in the next newsletter - Peter
